This study was conducted to examine the state of obesity and the attitude about obesity. The purpose of this study was to provide basic data to develop a schools, which was conveniently selected from 1st of May to 16th of July in 1998.
To identify the state of obesity among the subjects, the data from the physical examination which was conducted from may through July in each school was used and calculated with ¡¯Height-related standard body weight of Koran children¡¯ presented by Korean Pediatric Association in 1985. And to explore the attitudes about obesity, self-reported questionnaires which was developed by the researchers were administered.
Data were analyzed by ¥ö2-test, ANOVA using SAS program. The results were summarized as follows.
1. 73.4% of the students were in normal body weight, 12.5% were in overweight and 14.1% were in obese.
2. the obese students consider themselves as being obese and these were shown significant difference with normal weight and over weight students(¥ö2=108.16, p<.001).
3. The students who eat snacks more than once a day were shown significant difference in normal body weight, overweight, and obese students(¥ö2=22.35, p<.001).
4. The mean score of attitude about obesity was 50.9 point sout of 70 points. The range of the score were minimum 27 points to maximum 70 points.
5. The significant influencing factors on the attitude about obesity were extra curricular studying time and sleeping hours a day. Those who studied over 2 hours besides regular school hours(F=5.58, p<.025) and slept less than 7 hours a day(F=4.87, p<.05) had significantly higher scores in the attitude about obesity.
6. the obese students have higher mean scores of the attitude about obesity than normal body weight and overweight students, but not significantly so.
